Overview
Do you already know the basics of data modelling and need to know how to do it in PowerDesigner? Perhaps you're an experienced data modeller working with PowerDesigner for the first time? Maybe you're using an old version of PowerDesigner and you need your skills brought up to date?

This course commences with a discussion of the different types of data model supported by PowerDesigner, followed by a detailed explanation of the PowerDesigner working environment. If you're familiar with other data modelling tools, you will realise that PowerDesigner operates differently - it has its quirks, and you'll see how to make use of them. You'll also know how to take advantage of the features that you may not have seen in other tools, such as the Dependency Matrix.

Once you've got to grips with the environment and facilities, you'll work through a detailed case study, creating a chain of data models from Conceptual to Logical to Physical, applying normalisation and de-normalisation techniques where appropriate. In the case study. you'll see how PowerDesigner Projects enable you to visualise and manage your chain of models.

In addition, you'll see features added in version 16 - the Glossary and Reference models, and the improved Web Portal.

Client will Need to Provide:

  • Access to a printer
  • A workstation for each attendee or pair of attendees, with PowerDesigner 16 installed on each workstation
  • Whiteboard for ‘bulletin board’
  • Local modelling and naming standards (if applicable)

  • Use the right PowerDesigner data model for each task, by referencing the data model pyramid
  • Work effectively within the PowerDesigner environment
  • Create and Manage Conceptual, Logical and Physical Data Models
  • Generate, merge and compare models
  • Reverse-engineer an existing database to create data models
  • Synchronise physical data models with databases
  • Communicate your models using Excel exports, reports and the Web Portal
  • Use model extensions to enhance the information captured by PowerDesigner
  • Describe the importance of quality object names

This course has as prerequisite the Data Modelling Fundamentals course, or at a minimum an understanding of data modelling concepts.

Over the years, he has become proficient with several well-known (and not so well-known) data modelling tools, and generally becomes the local power user of each tool.
